The clarification and the establishment of the role of the bishop was extremely important and central to irenaeus" idea of apostolic faith. One of the ways you know of the operations of the apostles is through the inheritance of apostolic succession passed down with trust to the succeeding bishop, and the knowledge of the canon/scriptures. The rule of faith is used to interpret the canon and leads to catholic recognition as a major role. The christian community in rome was held in the highest regard, described by irenaeus as the greatest and most ancient church . Rome"s importance is because of the capital of the empire, although constantinople does claim some of this importance later. It is one of the apostolic churches that eventually becomes a patriarchal church. Antioch, alexandria, jerusalem and constantinople resided in the east while.
