SOC364H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Census Tract
Document Summary
Individuals living in a certain neighbourhood and the social network within neighbourhood will affect the living conditions and atmosphere within the neighbourhood. Neighbourhoods are socially patterned such that the most disadvantaged groups in society tend to live in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Neighbourhood ses conditions affect individual health, net of individual level characteristics. One will still affect the effects of the neighbourhood"s ses even if they don"t belong in the particular ses. Thus, social context then is an important, necessary consideration in social determinants research. This results as people typically don"t move around within their neighbourhood. Comparability- allows you to make comparisons with other research studies. Measurements are done on the national and city (of toronto) level. Neighbourhoods vary from each other even if they are right beside (or on top) of each other; i. e. rosedale vs north st. jamestown. Structural organization (ses composition, demographics, racial/ethnic composition, residential instability) Physical organization (transportation, neighbourhood segegration, abandoned buildings, street design)
