Social Control Lecture 10- Sex Work
• Sex work:
- Prostitution- an exchange of sex for money
- Sex trafficking: sex work is more voluntary, and sex trafficking is not, sex trafficking can
include forced labour, sexual exploitation and more.
- Sex work: consensual exchange of sex for money
- Tendency to attribute sex work and prostitution as well
- Prostitution tends to cover lenience’s face to face, and sex work is not always face to
face, not direct contact between clients and workers.
- Sex work refers to those who have chosen to enter sex industry, either as first or last
choice.
- Sex work emphasizes a occupation not a identity
- Prostitution is more negative
- Variety in sex work: adult entertainment, phone sex, escorts
• Human trafficking:
- Can include sex trafficking and labour trafficking, in order to exploit them often called
modern form of slavery.
- Recruitment, transportation, harbouring and or exercising control, direction or influence
over the movement of a person in order to exploit that person, typically through sexual
exploitation or forced labour.
- Canada was one of the worst in 2006, of our laws around human trafficking and how we
treated victims of human trafficking.
- In 2012 federal government adopted policy brief National Action Plan to combat human
trafficking.
- Unsure if human trafficking is going up or down
- Majority of victims are women and girls under 25, men charged between 18-34
- 95% victim’s were women
- majority are indigenous women
• Sex work:
- consensual transaction between adults, where the act of selling or buying sexual
services is not the same thing
- agents of social control will attempt to converge the two (sex work and prostitution),
however they are not the same
- hard to find out how much money is being spent on prostitution, no way to know unless
regulated. Majority happens in china, Spain, Germany (legal there), US, South Korea,
India etc.
