Master status: primary identity characteristic of an individuals (i. e. race, gender: ascribed (given to you at birth) I. e. race, gender, sex: embodied (physically contained, achieved (gained over the life course) A situated identities with a set of expectations; does not need to be explicitly gendered. Roles you cannot take on or take off. Role theory: sociology and in social psychology that considers most of everyday activity to be the acting out of socially defined categories. Intersection of roles can cause conflicts for some individuals. I. e. a banker may need to leave work early to pick up daughter from soccer game. So we can make assumptions about one"s sex without looking into one"s biological chemistry. We assume that when we interact with a female that they have physical body and biological features of a female. Then we assume that identify with that particular gender, in this case: female.
