Document Summary

Chapter 1: why democratic nations show a more ardent & enduring love for equality than for liberty. First and liveliest passions inspired by equality is love of that equality itself: esp. in france passion for equality is acquiring a greater hold over the human heart, our contemporaries love equality much more than liberty. Possible to imagine an extreme point where liberty and equality would meet and blend: ex. all citizens take a part in the gov"t and each has an equal right to do so. Freedom is found at different times and in different forms: not exclusively dependent on one social state, in more than just democracies. Equality is particular to democracies: ppl prefer it over rest bc it is distinctive to age they live, men hold onto equality bc think would last forever and bc. In ages of equality every man finds his beliefs within himself and his feelings are turned in on himself.
