Lecture 5 – Annotated Bibliography open help instead of class
• Question 1 – what question is/are the author(s) asking?
o Analyzing the work in either past or present tense
o No subheadings
o Relationship between our research question and our article – its ok if article
answers our question – we will need to refine our research question – ok if it
does’t aser it opletely
o This has nothing to do with my research question – we want to know about their
article and what the author is talking about in regards to their research question
o Full appreciation for what the author is trying to accomplish
o ** see tutorial slides
o article using secondary data – e a etio it, e do’t eed to iterrogate it
– more important to understand how they are using the data – more important
if the data makes sense with their research question
o collecting their own data – expensive so they will most likely say why they were
motivated to do so, etc.
• Question 2 – what method is/are the author(s) employing?
o author does’t larify hy they hae hose speifi data set – you a’t
oet o ho they do’t do this
o if they do’t talk aout it – oet o the fat that they do’t talk aout it
• Question 3 – tell us about their conceptualization and/or operationalization of central
concepts
o Concept is abstract and not directly observable
o To use a concept in your research question, you have to define how it is being
measured
o Talk about what concepts you see in their research question – and of those
concepts how do they measure/operationalize them and do you agree with the
ay they’e doe this
o A lot of self-reporting questions ^^
o Concept into a measure
o E.g., what factors contribute to a person being more or less likely to be
ghosted?
▪ Concepts are: factors and ghosted
▪ Operationalization: a phenomenon in which a person who previously
communicated (virtual, in-person) is suddenly and unexpectedly being
ignored
o Not enough to say they are wrong or something is inadequate – you need to say
hy ut you do’t eed to suggest a etter optio
o Do’t eed to fous o the otrolled ariales – focus on the concepts apart of
their research question
