Document Summary
So far we"ve discussed the importance of gender and race: Both represent a spectrum of characteristics that are grouped (sometimes problematically) into categories. The origins of class (from marx) are primarily economic. Class struggle is characterized by relationship to the means of production: i. e. bourgeoisie, petty bourgeoisie, proletariat. The means of production = how you make stu : the factory, the labour, assembly line, tools. The things that help produce certain products which are unevenly distributed b/n the groups. Marx"s con ict theory begins w/ an assumption that ppl. want to work, not just have to: explains why the working class have not yet revolted. It is productive work, not leisure, that under the right conditions is the ideal human activity - marx: it is the human condition to participate in productive work. Owners + workers have di . relations to the means of production. Workers are trying to make a living.
