Lecture 3 breaking the rules: deviance and crime . There is always of deviance and crime from socialization. Deviance: any behavior that is thought to violate a widely held norm. (social) norm: a rule guide of standard that establishes what is considered culturally desirable and appropriate in a particular community. Deviance includes all the behaviors that people disapprove of. Deviance depends on the viewer: what is considered deviant and what is not. In social life, most rules and controls are largely invisible. Most people want to conform to the norms of a community. People base their opinions of themselves largely on how they believe other people view them; they feel punished when others disapprove of their actions. Most social norms are informal and unspoken and sometimes hard to learn. George herbert mead: people lead and internalize views of the generalized other" in childhood. Well-socialized people can experience guilt, shame if they feel they have broken the rules.
