Peter, paul, andrew, john, and thomas; numerous letters attributed to various early followers of jesus; several essays or tractates; apocalypses (imaginations of the future judgment) attributed to john, peter, paul; and a manual of church order. This course offers an introduction to these writings, and to the various early christ groups that produced them. These writings represent different perspectives on the significance of. Jesus; differing understandings of their relationships to judaism, to the roman empire, and to the world; and differing perspectives on gender relations, slavery, the physical world, and the self. 5 short papers/exercises of 4-5 pages, double spaced. These are all identified in the syllabus (for september 24; october 8; november 19; january 14; march 18). Grades for tutorials are only earned by attendance and informed participation. This means that you will have to prepare for the tutorial by completing the assigned readings.
