Document Summary
Linear motion: directions, head can translate along any of the 3 coordinate directions. X-axis: (roll) through nose and out of back of head. Tilt: change with respect to gravity: directions. Z-axis does not change tilt in relation to gravity. Responsible for detecting rotational acceleration (angular acclecration: sensitive to changes in speed of rotation, not sensitive to rotation at constant velocity. 90 degree angles to each other: superior semicircular canals: closer to nose, posterior semicircular canals: closer to back of head, lateral semicircular canals: lies horizontally, ampulla: base. Ampulla: transduction occurs: ampulla contains crista (epithelium of hair cells, crista are covered by cupula (gelatenous liquid) When head rotates, semicircular canals also rotates. Each of three semicircular canals has at its base called ampulla which houses sensory epithelium of hair cells called crista. The hair bundles extend out of crista and into a gelatenous liquid called cupula. Cupula is distorted by movment of the endolymphatic uid.
