Concerned with type of things our memory can hold. Concerned with processes that allow information to enter and exit memory. Sensory input sensory memory short term memory long term memory. Stm + maintenance rehearsal information stays in stm. Ltm some information may be lost over time. Limited capacity store that holds basic sensory information for a very limited amount of time. Have a different storey for each of our senses. Attention helps pass items into sensory store on to short term memory. Echoic and tactile tend to have longer durations. When asked to remember as many letters as they can (whole report), people can only remember 3-4 items. When cued to report one row only (partial report), people could remember approx 3/4 items in that row. Limited capacity store holds information for brief period.
