Anxiety is a necessary emotional response, helps us to adapt to and function in our envir"ts, built in emotions, motivates us towards/away from stimuli. Emotion has both cognitive and physiological components, adaptive. Motivation works by producing an emotion, involves hypothalamus. Can become maladaptive when intensity, duration, frequency are above and beyond what it"s meant to do adaptively. To eliminate all anxiety in life is also abnormal. Purpose is to prepare you for a threat. Public speaking is the number one fear in north america, second is death. 3 components of anxiety: psychophysiological: racing heart, shortness of breath, hormonal change etc. , measurements that indicate that a person is anxious are objectively measured change in heart rate, respiration, pupil dilation (bigger); frequency, intensity, duration.
