Psy240 lecture 8: somatic symptoms disorders, dissociative disorders, and eating. Experience of significant physical symptoms for which there is no apparent medical (organic) cause. Experience 1 or more somatic symptoms causing significant distress or impairment. Symptoms may change, but having symptoms is constant. Somatic symptoms need not be present, but may be. Ex: feel a tickle in the back of their throat, they"ll go around and do many things to care for it. Theories of somatic symptom and illness anxiety disorders. Pay too much attention to physical changes and catastrophize symptoms. May misinterpret physical changes to themselves as times of concern. May think they"re vulnerable to wide range of illnesses and unable to handle pain. May experience bodily symptoms more than others would, more apt to notice things such as mild headaches, or something off about their stomach. Post-traumatic stress disorder places people at risk for developing one of these disorders.
