Document Summary
Cognitive approaches to personality: key terms & main idea. Awareness & thinking as well as specific mental acts like perceiving, attending to, interpreting, remembering, believing, judging, deciding, anticipating. The transformation of sensory input into mental representations and the manipulation of these mental representations. It is individual differences in cognition & information processing that gives rise to individual differences in personality. Over time we developed relatively stable ways of processing information personality & perception. Witkin argued that personality can be revealed through differences in how people perceive their environment. Perception is the process through which we select, organize, and interpret input from our sensory receptors. Introduced the concept of field dependence vs. field independence. Some people rely on other things in the environment (ex. Are other objects tilted too? ) whereas some people rely more on cues from their body (ex. I am upright so it must be the object that is tilted ) personality & perception: witkin.
