Document Summary
To be fully functioning one must live one s life as it happens. No one knows you better than you know yourself, thus the therapist s role is to understand what the client is experiencing. We are all motivated to progress toward some ultimately satisfying state of being. Needs are hierarchically organized with basic needs at the bottom, self-actualization need at the top. Needs lower in hierarchy are more pressing when not satisfied compared to those toward the top. Maslow did not mean that: he hierarchy is precise, comprehensive & universal er needs must be 100% satisfied before higher needs can be satisfied. Any given behaviour is motivated by a single need. Hierarchical organization & lower needs being stronger than higher needs. Value gratifying higher needs more than lower needs. They don t let their own wishes/desires colour reality. They realize that themselves & others make mistakes and have flaws.
