Document Summary
Week 04: ego psychology and identity (reading: supplementary) Jung had a darwinian and theological way of thinking. He was interested in alternate systems of meaning, and alchemy as a way of understanding deep human dynamics. Jung agreed that we have some form of consciousness and some form of unconsciousness, and explicit and implicit processes. However, jung had a different characterization of consciousness and unconsciousness. Unconsciousness was split into personal unconscious and collective unconscious. Personal unconscious your experiences in life affect how you act and think. Every experience has made neural connections and affected brain organization. Internal and external sources, plus other determinants, direct what you remember. Where jung diverged from everyone else was his emphasis on the collective unconscious, which is outside of the individualistic part of the individual. The collective unconscious can be deep genetic inheritance, transported into us by (cid:373)(cid:455)sti(cid:272)al (cid:373)ea(cid:374)s, et(cid:272).
