No grand unified theory of personality psychology whole field is messy. Diversity in theories i will be able to relate in one or another but to get down to an individual personality is lots of complexity. He hopes that incoherence of personality psychology is cool/makes it interesting. Personality theory co-evolved with clinical practice (consultants) because clinicians are wondering what"s happening with this person. Practice of studying personality dynamics and why people are the way they are. Early theorists were laying the foundation for personality psych laying theoretical foundation. If ignore early theorists you miss potential for understanding yourself. Early theorists were looking at themselves so often see their theories reflect their personality. There are theories that cover broad aspects of human experience and as you get more specific you might start to lose yourself in the forest of trees. Broad theories touch all of us in some fundamental ways.
