PSY220H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fundamental Attribution Error, Impression Formation, Confirmation Bias

38 views4 pages

Document Summary

Attribution theories are concerned with how we explain peoples behaviour (why did x do y?) When we have to work with thie person. Outcome dependence: when our own success or failure is linked to success or failure of another. When we are suspicious of the person. Sometimes automatic category based perception (use stereotype group) => this is the default why we form impressions. But in other circumstances we become motivated to form a controlled, attribute based perception. Expected to volunteer to interact with former schrizo (frank). Independent variables: outcome dependency: winning either depended on schrizo participation or not. Personal profile: contained either neutral info or positive info that was inconsistent with schrizo category. Hypotheses: when given inconsistent personal info, everyone will would form attribute based impressions. When given neutral info those who were not dependent on frank would use categorical info to form their impression. But those who are dependent onfrank would form attribute-based impressions.
