Document Summary

Boomerang effect=> people tend to adjust their behaviour according to descriptive norms (the average of what other people are doing). So if you drink less than the norm, then you will start drinking more to be inline with descriptive norms. Field study=> give people descriptive norm (what people are doing)and also injunctive norm ( what people should be doing/ smiley face and frowny face). Result: people who got injective norm plus descriptive norm showed no boomerang effect (no change for people with less consumption). People who only got descriptive norm has boomerang effect (those people who used more energy than the average, reduced consumption/ but people who used less energy than the average increase energy consumption => boomerang effect) Resisting normative influence: knowledge is powerful: being aware when and how norms are being against you, questions claims about relationships. Should you feel obligated to this salesperson: question other view of the situation.
