Selecting treatment have been shown to be effective though research (versus intuition or evidence) Sat in a position that the patient couldn"t see him so they could focus on their thoughts. Problems were due to some unconscious conflict beneath the surface reasons. Insight: increase patient"s understanding of their own psychological processes. Encouragement of personal growth through self-understanding (repeating what they say to show that you are listening) Attempts to modify thought patterns in order to eliminate maladaptive behaviours and emotion. Ex: cognitive restructuring: maladaptive thought pattern boss yelled at me, i"m worthless, depression. After cognitive restructuring boss yelled at me, he is a jerk, no depression. Anti-anxiety drugs: short term treatment of anxiety increase gaba activity. Antidepressants: ssris (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), increase serotonin levels. Antipsychotics (neuroleptics): block dopamine, reduce positive symptoms of schizophrenia.
