Social pain is the same as physical pain (running the same pathways) Phineas gage: lost language function (spear through head)/hit precise area, whole personality structure changes. If brain functions holistically than you would lose a proportion of your functionality. Holism: works through integrating many different areas (holism), any given neuron has hold of many different memories. Localization: but areas of the brain do become specialized. Most complex processes require integration of all systems and sub-systems. Amount of cortical tissue (size) reflects the amount of time you spend learning these tasks, your importance for them and how good you are at them. You change the structure of your brain through your brain (reinforce areas of brain, if you are depressed, make more tissue in brain depressed) It is the physical and sociocultural environments surrounding you, which continually create and reinforce patterns in your brain: and within the brain, you arise b/c of the interconnection of many functioning subsystems.
