Document Summary
Developmental psychology focuses on the physiological, cognitive, and social changes that occur in individuals across the lifespan. Strong, emotional connection that persists over time and across circumstances. Adaptive encourages proximity between child and mother. Results contradicted the behaviorist perspective and had widespread societal implications. Upset when the caregiver leaves, but easily comforted upon their return. Clings to the caregiver, gets upset, both wants and resists comfort (may act angry) Little distress when caregiver leaves, avoids caregiver upon their return. **study relies on observational data (coding the behavior of the children!) Rules and structure (high expectations), also highly responsive to the child. Neglectful (indifferent) low responsiveness, low demandingness. Permissive (indulgent) high responsiveness, low demandingness lack of structure. Authoritarian (strict) low responsiveness, high demandingness. Importance of considering social and cultural influences on development. Complicated by the fact that some stage theories support continuous development (e. g. erikson) Think: epm reminds you a little of edm identity vs role confusion in adolescence!
