Brief history of mental illness: when we go back to colonial times in america 1600s, supernatural explanations were provided as reasoning for mental illness. Idea that individuals were unsafe and kept locked up > lunacy Baby left out under the light of the full moon would develop a psychological disorder: moral treatment, not the persons fault, but social causes that can cause these issues so individuals diagnosed should be treated with respect. Traditional medical model: mental health should be treated in same way as physical health; Looks at trying understand psychological disorders by integrating biological and social factors. Emphasize interaction between visiting vulnerability in person like genetic disposition that puts them at risk, couple with life/environmental stressor nature nurture type model. Abnormal behaviour: some misconceptions & controversies: medical/disease model focuses on biological causes. Implies that it is not the fault of the person, which is important, but does not necessarily reduce sigma or discrimination.
