Idea that we can describe people using same type of trait but people have unique constellation of traits. Use same terms/labels but people are unique where they sit in these particular labels: objective measures: self-reports, informant ratings. Projective measures: rorschach inkblot (no scientific evidence given), Tat > not asking directly to report on own personality, but assume that an aspect will leak out when ambiguous stimulus presented. Personality > characteristic thoughts, emotional responses, and behaviours that are relatively stable in an individual over time and across circumstances: numerous approaches to studying and conceptualizing personality. Behaviourist > individual in situations where behaviour is positively reinforced: freud"s psychodynamic theory personality is unconscious forces, energy, that travels around a closed system. Conscious mind is very small > tip of the iceberg. Preconscious > not currently accessible but we can pull into awareness/ consciousness if we want to/motivated (under surface of the water with tip)
