Document Summary

Personality comes from the latin word, meaning mask. Greeks + romans used to wear masks that would represent different personalized characters. Ppl have always been interested in personality + what makes us unique. Idiographic approaches: person-centered, focuses on looking at every person as a distinct, unique perspective. May ask them to tell their life story. Abt the person only; not comparing/contrasting them to anyone else; unique way of describing them, not categorizing people. Projective measures: ppl project themselves/their personality/subconscious onto an ambiguous stimuli. Rorschach inkblot: vague inkblots that someone projects onto to see a full image, not valid not used by psychologists. Thematic apperception test: need for achievement, power, affiliation being asked to write a story based on an image. E. g. writing a story based on an image of 2 women in a lab, which often shows a need for power, affiliation, and achievement. Person"s own desires and motivations coming out.
