Normal and abnormal are subjective terms our views are influenced by personal feelings, opinions, experiences, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status. The same behavior can be interpreted in different ways based on context and circumstances. Example : person screaming on a roller coaster isn"t weird, but person screaming while sitting at a desk at work is. Psychological disorder causes impairment in a person"s life. Prevents them from doing things they need to and want to do. Tends to be consistent over a span of time. Signs and symptoms of a psy disorder are assessed by mental health professionals to determine abnormal behaviours, thoughts and feelings. Four d"s provide some guidance for the assessment: deviance - describes a departure from what are normal thoughts, behaviours and feelings that don"t line up with the generally accepted standard. Can be measured against statistical standards or cultural views. Statistically deviants behaviours occur infrequently among members of the population.
