Developmental psychology focuses on the physiological, cognitive, and social changes that occur in individuals across the lifespan. The five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste, touch. Reflexes: grasping, rooting (brushing your finger against its cheek the baby opens its mouth and moves its cheek), sucking. Strong, emotional connection that persists over time and across circumstances. Adaptive -> encourages proximity between child and mother. Harry harlow (1959): attachment in rhesus monkeys. Mom as milk vs. mom as comfort . Results contradicted the behaviorist perspective and had widespread societal implications. Research raised a lot of ethical questions. Relies on observational data (coding the behavior of the children) Upset when caregiver leaves, but easily comforted upon their return. Little distress when caregiver leaves, avoid the caregiver upon their return insecure-ambivalent/resistant: Clings to caregiver, gets upset, but resists comfort (ex: may act angry) During each stage of development, children form new schemas -> ways of perceiving, organizing, and thinking about how the world works.
