Goals & Motivation
-Despite the early dominance of behaviourists approaches, psychologists now
recognize the intimate role that top-down process (i.e. MEANING, construal,
interpretation), play I'm determining how our motivational systems function
The Continuum of Motivation
-Amotivation on y axis, self-determined on right of x axis, not self-determined on left of
x axis
-The reasons we don't fill the goals, is because of willpower, you can take the same
person with same amount of willpower and make them adopt a different frame of
thinking then their willpower works a lot better, just a lack of skillful application
-Is your will in the actual selection of the goal? You have to engage your will to pursue
your goal, but what about the selection? Harder if you haven't thought of it that if you
did
Monkey Experiment
-solve puzzles, gets rewards, the more rewards they get, the less intrinsic motivation
they get
-They only solve it to get reward, no motivation
-Left -> right: Extrinsic Motivations
-External regulation: rewards, punishments, authority command, social
pressure, etc.
-Introjected regulation: partial internalization of reward/punishment; contingent
self-esteem, ego-involvement
