Document Summary
Explains irrational behaviour in terms of inner conflict between different parts of the psyche. We reject almost all of it, but freud is still a towering figure. Psychoanalysis was the birthplace of the unconscious in psychology. Nature and nurture and their interaction - an important insight. Freud divides the psyche into three functional systems. Each system works according to different principles and motivations. Very similar to modern day models of cognition. What needs to be done in order to stay in sync with reality? . Jung challenged some of freud"s specific claims but made changes to the picture of the psyche that are still currently influential. The hydraulic model was freud"s, with pressures pushing things into repression or redirection. Replaced it with the dialogical organic model, which is more in line with current concepts of how parts of the brain talk to eachother.
