Document Summary
Humidification: gas exchange, oxygen transport, carbon dioxide transport. Beatrice is in third trimester of pregnancy and presents with complaints of shortness of breath (sob) Unable to increase thoracic cavity bc of diaphragm being constricted. Differing hemoglobin from the mother and the fetus ensures that flow is towards the fetus. Fetal hemoglobin has higher affinity for oxygen than maternal hemoglobin, allowing easy transfer. Increase 2,3-dpg also ensures mother oxygen is released for fetus. Total atm pressure = sum of partial pressures. Partial pressure is the fractional concentration times the total pressure. Fractional concentration applies to gases only - regular conc for gases dissolved in liquid. Air is 100% humidified once in the lungs. Need to subtract to find the pb (the pressure of the system) This means that the pb is usually 713 mmhg. Pb = po2 + pco2 + pn2 + ph2o. Gases go from high partial pressure to low partial pressure.
