Document Summary
Features of acquired immunity: b and t cells, activation of b cells, classes of antibodies / humoral immunity. Vaccines: mounts a specific immune response against a pathogen. Specificity: activated by and responds to a specific antigen. Both b and t cells have receptors that recognize specific shapes. Versatility: ready to confront any antigen at anytime. If new virus emerges, people can respond despite not being seen. Different b and t cells have different receptors. Some activated b and t cells are long lasting for prolonged protection. Tolerance: responds to foreign substances but ignores normal tissues. B and t cells with receptors that recognize ourself are deleted during development or not activated. Antigens are recognized by the immune cells, causing a response. Antibodies are protein complexes that recognizes an antigen. Specificity comes from the structure of the receptor. Versatility: b cells have slight changes in aa seq of proteins to allow recog of antigens.
