Adrenal glands case study: the man with the moon face. A 50-year-old has recently developed a moon face and has accumulated weight on his torso, but his legs and arm are thin. He has experienced changes in mood and muscle weakness. During a physical exam, his doctor discovers he has mild hyperglycemia. Pituitary tumour or treatment with oral steroids (exogenous corticosteroids) Establish if the patient is being given cortisol, if so: reduce exogenous cortisol dose. If tumour is inoperable: prescribe medications to control cortisol production (inhibitors of 11 hydroxylase) Peak bone mass occurs between 20-30 years of age. Part of the preservation of the mother; if bones of embryo were fully ossified, it would be really uncomfortable for the mother: cartilage not fully ossified, active growth plates. Adolescent: bones fully ossified, growth plates closing towards end of puberty. Contract bone but wont lengthen it: bone loss > 40 years.
