PSL300H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Zona Fasciculata, Zona Glomerulosa, Adrenal Medulla
Document Summary
A 10-year-old boy with extreme thirst, frequent urination and hunger (his symptoms started 2 weeks ago). In spite of eating much more than normal, he is losing weight. He is lethargic, has a higher than normal respiratory rate and his blood pressure is lower than normal. Explain the physiological basis for each of the symptoms: Weight loss due to inability to store nutrients; no insulin so you"re not storing/using glucose. Frequent urination/thirst due to high plasma glucose and high blood osmolarity. High respiratory rate due to ketosis low ph due to: ketosis continues in the absence of insulin release of ketone bodies, respiratory rate rises because you"re trying to counteract the low ph. Low blood pressure due to dehydration due to water loss leading to loss of blood volume. The paired adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. Each region secretes different hormones: outer capsule doesn"t secrete anything, adrenal cortex secretes steroid hormones.
