Document Summary
Pitting natural man with civilized man (literally and figuratively: what are the central tenants of the natural man, how is he better off than the civilized man. He enjoys true freedom: how does modernity effect us/ disadvantage us. Physically: modern living has brought about more disease. Psychologically: society teaches us to live outside of ourselves. Means that our sense of connection with others has been put to bad use, we are afraid of judgement from others. Regulate ourselves and our behaviours to maintain our reputation. This becomes very important in how we create our life plans. We are trying to please, but also to outdo each other, as this is the only way we know to build our self esteem. Sense of self relies on outdoing each other (narcissism) and being saturated in ourselves. Destroys our natural sense of pity, we are the prisoners of public opinions (sometimes called alienation) Socially: we are interdependent, which is not always bad.
