Document Summary
Regime changes: 1947-1973: unstable authoritarianism, 1973-1976: unconsolidated democracy. Different kind of authoritarian: 1988-2006: unconsolidated democracy, 2006 coup and aftermath. How can we explain the change: sufficient grow of middle class, middle class sometimes not so friendly to democracy, rural areas in opposition to the middle class, elite has been divided in the past. Division is useful for change, but deep division is dangerous, doesn"t get dissolved by democracy: one unique factor in thailand: the monarchy. A state dominated by bureaucratic military elements. First period with stability and high growth in thailand. Tight authoritarianism: does not have parliament, parties, labor unions --> not democracy, unstable. 1973-1976: unconsolidated democracy: collapse of the authoritarian regime. 1973 riots and the collapse of the government. Students are highly involved in riots (products of middle class) Military cracked down the demonstrations: only 3 years. In early years, the high growth was due to the war (provided supplies from the military)
