There are two sorts: active and passive. It is sometimes thought of as killing vs. letting die. There is another division: voluntary and involuntary. Some people used to think that you could gure out the moral analysis of euthanasia by dividing cases into euthanasia, but this doesn"t seem to be the case. It used to be thought to be in con ict with the principle of non-male cence, but it is now recognized that it can be legitimate. The supreme court ruled in favour of the family. This is a case wherein life-sustaining treatment is refused. Some cases are clearly wrong, e. g. murder. !1: compare to the treatment of pets: with pets, we think it is more humane to let them die; with humans, we think it is inhumane. Now, we call this physician-assisted suicide: there has been intense controversy over the past 30 years, doctor kevorkian, netherlands: now legalized.
