Document Summary

There are three forms of good of note here: virtue, pleasure and knowledge. Pleasure, understood as feeling and directly opposed to pain, yields two arguments for it: first, from ross, pg. 135: if virtue is indeed a higher-level good, so that one"s love of x" is good, x" must be inherently good as well. Likewise, if the hatred of x" is good, then x" is evil: second, an argument of malicious/undeserved pleasure. Knowledge, speci cally knowledge which concerns laws of the universe: ross holds that only this kind of knowledge, fundamental, generalizable and explanatory, yields great signi cance. Ross, pg. 147-148: ross elaborates on degrees of value" within knowledge, based on evidence and generality: pg. 148: however, the instrumental value of other, more particular knowledge, can question that. Consider false beliefs portrayed in the experience machine concerning the user"s physical situation.
