Document Summary

Aristotle critique"s plato"s view of the polis. Plato is very sensitive to the evils of civil strife which leads him to a form of communism. We saw several reasons why aristotle thought this wasn"t a good idea, making the city as uni ed as possible would have many problems. There is a point at which the polis, advancing in unity, will cease to be a city. The right kind of a city is in harmony not in unison. There is supposed to be private ownership but there is supposed to be a certain kind of generosity. Aristotle gives a defence of individual property. The defence is not based on individual rights (not like locke). His ideas about individual property are rooted in his conception of the individual virtue and a conception of the common good tied to a certain picture of human nature.
