Summary of week 2: philosophy and feminism: anti-essentialism. The feminism that prof supports is more conservative. Dialogue is primarily about love, not sex: speech topics in the symposium, p: a sense of importance for an individual state of mind (love) and how it might afect your character and dispositions. For example, it might impel you to be a better person or whatever you are. Love makes you want to behave better: c: some of the dark side of love is brought out. Love, by deinition, if it really involves the desires it does, including the desire for beauty, cannot be a god. It is something between what has and what doesn"t have beauty, just as someone who sincerely wants to learn something is in between total ignorance and wisdom. That"s the source of socrates"s wisdom - unlike other people, he knows he doesn"t know anything. This leads to the crazy idea that there is a ladder of love.
