PHL205 Lecture 1: Introduction
Overview
- From the end of the roman empire to the high middle ages (354-1142)
• Augustine to the death of Peter Aberlard
• This is a period that ends when Aristotle’s work is translated into Latin.
• The people we are considering think about philosophy more in everyday jargon and
less in a technical vocabulary.
• This is a period with a couple of very important philosophical discovery.
- The capacity of the will
- Freedom of the will
• How is it that we act freely even though most of the things in the world are
determined in one way or another?
- The spirit
• Arguments for the existence of God
- All authors write in Latin
- Augustine
• Bishop in North Africa
• Teacher of rhetoric
• While he was bishop he wrote Confessions and many other works
• The fact that he was a bishop shows us a lot about the setting of his writing. He
needed leisure. Philosophers were mostly very rich.
