PCL102H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Drug Discovery, Bipolar Disorder, Serendipity
Document Summary
Lecture 22: a history of the future of drug. Right now, nothing is undruggable all we need is a target and technology will do the rest: a target is usually a protein that if we manipulate its function it will prevent pathology and restore health. If you have an unhealthy individual, you can identify the difference and modulate (fix) is to treat the disease. Blocking interactions by targetting proteins may cure disease but also harm the patient if the drug is not selective for that target only (i. e. off-target effects) Selectivity is important and some targets are easier than others. The hope for the future is to design the perfect molecule to make strong interaction with any druggable target (i. e. there will be nothing undruggable) Although we have come a long way in drug discovery, we still do not have the full picture for every disease and we don"t have the computational power.
