Lecture 17: clinical trials in global health and special populations. Nds affect pop in low-income countries, such that over 1 billion people suffer from neglected tropical diseases (ntd) Nds are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality; and directly contribute to poverty in these low-income nations. Poor healthcare infrastructure worsens health outcomes; therefore, it is difficult to assess true burden of disease due to stigma. The big three infections (i. e. hiv, malaria, tb) get more attention and 2400$ than nds: the presence of untreated ntd can worsen health outcomes in those with the one or more of the big three diseases. There are 4 categories of ntds: protozoa (e. g. chagas disease, african sleeping sickness, etc. ) Millions affected/pyr: bacteria (e. g. leprosy, trachoma) - thousands affected/yr, helminth (e. g. ascariasis, hookworm, whipworm) - hundreds of millions of people affected/yr, virus (e. g. dengue, rabies) Although, ntds remain severe problem a majority of ntds have decreased in prevalence (e. g. rabies is down.
