Document Summary

Empires of the first millenium bc: the neo-babylonian empire. Nabopolassar = plays key role in the fall of assyria. Period of economic revival (from vast increase in cuneiform tablet) around 604-562 bc. Neo-babylonian kings ruled over parts of northern and southern mesopotamia. Succession is broken where the rule is passed to someone outside of the succession. Thus cannot call it a dynasty, because dynasty refers to unbroken succession. Prolonged struggles with assyria (region of uruk) around 17th century. Esarhaddon restored babylon, not long after his father destroyed it. We don"t know the exact location of cuneiform tablets (because they were excavated by early explorers, and not documented) The reverse of a contract: towards the end of the contract would be listed the names of all of the witnesses of the tablet, along with the date. Documents give us detailed basis for reconstructing social and economic history. Neo-babylonia rulers kept babylonia that way (in ruins)
