Document Summary

No case study can be representative of full population: methods, topics or approaches. Book calls these nonreactive research because the person being studied has no opportunity to react; i. e. surveys, interviews, observations: secondary research. Equivalence of concepts may be difficult to determine. Looks at similarities and differences between cultures or within the same culture over time. Commonly employ secondary data including historical documents, diaries and published information. Can do primary research involving field studies, experiments, surveys etc. Advantages: multivariate analysis is often possible, even easy. Examples of critical research: feminism, disability/diversity studies, minority research, rights- based, symbolic interactionism. See inequality as rooted in exploitative social relations. Advocate sociopolitical and structural change: feminist research. Share many views but may differ on key issues. Variety of quantitative and qualitative methods but more emphasis on qualitative methods. Activist want to show their interventions: core themes common to all critical approaches.
