It was thought by aristotle that the universe is composed of two distinct regions: celestial (moon and stars, where everything is made of aether), and the terrestrial region, made of 4 elements. Of these elements, 2 are heavy (earth, water as they descend towards the center of the universe) and 2 are light (air, fire as they ascend towards the periphery of our sublunar region). Earth is heaviest and that"s (cid:449)hy it"s the center of the uni(cid:448)erse, then layer of (cid:449)ater, then air, then fire. So the apple (made of earth and water) descends towards the center of the universe: nowadays: one would explain the phenomenon using einstein"s theory of general relativity. An object of considerable mass curves the space-time, by curving the light rays: example 2, say i meet someone called rupert thomas gould. If i"m used to anglophone customs, i see a first, middle and last name.
