Document Summary
Genetics of cancer: cancer is a genetic disease at the level of somatic cells, different molecular changes that lead to tumourgenic states. Lecture 21 outline: somatic mutation and the genetics of cancer, cancer cell characteristics, oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes, personalized cancer treatment. Two unifying themes about cancer genetics: cancer is a genetic disease, mutations in genes that regulate cell division, or active cell death, environmental factors, different inheritance pattern than other genetic disorders. Inherited mutations can predispose to cancer: mutations causing cancer occur in somatic cells, mutations accumulate in clonal descendants of a single cell. Tumour arises from a single cell that has cloned. 2: growth factors that control proliferation positively, or negative regulators of proliferation, only when the cell is exposed to these factors do we get proliferation or growth inhibition. Cancer phenotypes result from the accumulation of mutations: result: a clone of cells that overgrows normal cells.
