Document Summary

01/14 lecture: contesting slavery: violence, rebellions and marronage. Maroon societies consisted of runaway slaves and their families. Represents a key component of slave resistance (ie. anywhere from not being productive to self-mutilation). They had to be remote enough that they weren"t captured but close enough to trade, kidnap members of the community and survive. ie. communities in guyana survived because there was too much space for slave-holders to control everyone. Had to be able to produce what they needed or obtain it through trade. Had to be able to reproduce (probably the most difficult requirement). Maroons made important cultural influences (ie. music, food, traditions). They would play colonial powers against each other (exploit the one best for. *some communities have survived into the present day. them). 16th century, british traders started to use honduras for timber. Spanish try to take the area back from the british but eventually cede control.
