Lecture 4: island evolution cont"d + plate tectonics and biotic changes. Evolved from inchworms which arrived on the island. Have them because those niches were empty on hawaii when those caterpillars arrived. Adaptive radiation = evolution into niches: lots of different species coming from one or two ancestor species. Nothing to do with island biogeography theory because that doesn"t cover adaptive radiation. The silver swords = example of adaptive radiation: dispersed by wind/feathers of bird, tarweed = ancestor of it, has speciated into 3 separate genera. Look very different from a single common ancestor. From very few founders have >125 lobeliad species. On mainland orchids usually compete with them a lot. Exist in variety of habitats and growth forms. Their normal host for pollination would have been insects. = opportunity for co-evolution with other pollinators honey creepers. Speciated and founded other patches via allopatric speciation.
