GGR272H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Data Model, Water Cycle, List Of Association Football Teams To Have Won Four Or More Trophies In One Season
Document Summary
May 11: lecture 2 - introduction to arcgis. Map is simplified version of reality -- infinite complexity of real world (e. g. every blade of grass: features included depends on who we are and our goal in making map, different purposes determine what is included and excluded. Can think of real things as discrete objects (e. g. buildings) Can think of things as continuous phenomena -- e. g. temperature, elevation. How to show on digital map -- use models. Model: simplified version of reality: model: e. g. region (state or province), system (hydrologic cycle) Data model: way of organizing and representing data that presents a simplified version of reality: e. g. lines are simplified versions of roads. Rivers often represented as lines -- but could also be represented as areas. Question of how to simplify information and create generalization: another question is where to draw boundary -- it is different at different times of year.
