Document Summary

Issues societies? died: this all changes around 5000 years ago with the early bronze age, large rise in burial evidence, perhaps greater shift in individual identity. Site of manika has rock-cut chamber tombs: ayios kosmas has cist graves, tsepi (marathon) has cist graves. Some investment of labour in a way we have not previously seen. Similar things happening in cyclades with some differences: marginal agricultural environment - rocky, vary little water, population expansion in early bronze age; then nucleation at key sites. Chalandirana - kastri on syros fortified hill-top of kastri. Perhaps differentiation of family and status evidenced by dissimilarity of grave goods. Some tholos are quite big - more than 10m across therefore a lot of room for burials. Some impressive grave goods but each community appears to be of same status: however, looting might have tempered with context.
